The Lean Review

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is an essential diagnostic tool for all organizations.  It is used to differentiate those processes that add value and create wealth from those that generate waste and ultimately reduce customer satisfaction.

It is a qualitative tool by which you describe in detail how your supply chain should operate in order to create flow. It will help you to visualize more than just the sources of waste in your value stream.  It can form the basis of an implementation plan that you can use to eliminate those wastes.

We have carried out some  extensive Value Stream Mapping within some of our food manufacturing client companies, including Irish chocolate manufacturer Lilly O’Briens (www.lillyobriens.ie) and the Kerry Group (www.kerrygroup.com).

These clients have benefited from using Lean principles during their Value Stream Mapping exercises to deliver improvements.

Value Stream Mapping is

designed for professionals

and staff seeking to gain a greater understanding of the processes in which they work, and wish to support or drive the elimination of waste/non-value-add activities in those processes.

Current and  Future State Map – Drawing a current and  ‘ideal’ future state map of your process.

Value Stream Planning – Supporting the development of the value stream plan, that prioritizes the improvement activities that will be undertaken.

Implementation and Next Steps – Facilitating a work session allowing for effective implementation of all the improvements, and  project managing  the implementation steps.

Roll out – Initiating a Lean implementation strategy

across the organization

During the consultation

process all participants are able to identify waste, understand exactly what customer (internal and external) actually require from your business and core processes and most importantly learn how to develop a project improvement plan.

Mary Ann O’Brien started her company Lily O’Brien’s, named after her daughter, in 1992.  Since then the company has rapidly expanded and its

manufacturing facility is now based in Newbridge, Co. Kildare.

Kerry Group today is a leader in global food ingredients and flavours markets, and a leading branded consumer foods processing and marketing organisation in selected EU markets.
